How do lakes respond to climate change? The researchers of IGB have set out to find answers to this complex question. Their worldwide unique experimental facility in Lake Stechlin allows them to set up environmental conditions in the lake that are expected to occur in the future due to climate change (see also Lakes under climate change).

One of their objectives is to estimate the influence of climate change on biodiversity, the interactions of organisms in the food web and on material cycles in the lake. Another objective is to explain the mechanisms underlying these changes. The LakeLab is designed as a multidisciplinary research platform: Researchers from around the world are invited to use this infrastructure to test their own ideas and methods.
