The LakeLab on Lake Stechlin is one of 14 Brandenburg award winners of the competition "365 Landmarks in the Land of Ideas". Minister-President Matthias Platzeck presented IGB researcher Hans-Peter Grossart with the official plaque of honour on the 5th of March.

At a reception in the state chancellery in Potsdam, Minister-president Matthias Platzeck praised the selected ideas and projects as important trends for the future. Under the patronage of the Federal President, the "Germany – Land of Ideas" initiative awards 365 of the most innovative landmarks of Germany each year in a nationwide competition.

LakeLab has locked its sights on climate change

How do lakes respond to climate change? The Leibniz Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries (IGB) expects to learn important answers to this question from its lake-in-a-lake project at Lake Stechlin in Brandenburg. The worldwide unique LakeLab comprises 24 huge experimental tubes that isolate lake-water basins 9 metres in diameter and 20 metres deep, all the way down to the lake bottom. Experiments conducted inside them then yield insights into changes in biodiversity and into the ecological processes taking place in the lake. Working from these insights, measures can be developed if the living conditions in lakes change as a result of climate change.

Good ideas "made in Brandenburg"

Minister-President Matthias Platzeck congratulated Prof. Dr. Hans-Peter Grossart and Dr. Christof Engelhardt as representatives of IGB on the impressive idea of the LakeLab and presented the official plaque of honour of the competition. "Good ideas made in Brandenburg: The distinguished projects stand for creativity and innovation. Brandenburg has much of both to offer," minister-president Platzeck said.
